Your Lie in April

Naoshi Arakawa has done it. He has made an anime that can make an old man cry.

Your Lie in April is a slice of life anime with a deep twist.

Kousei, is a piano prodigy that is unable to play music after his mother dies, until he meets a beautiful violin player named Kaori. The anime is a coming of age story encompassing notions of passion, romance , friendship and freedom.

As a coming of age story there is always one thing to consider and, that’s character development. The anime does not take a one glove fits all perspective but, it allows Kousei’s friends to experience their own personal development throughout the series.

The technical elements are both intrinsically natural and breath taking. When I watched this anime for the first time, what pulled me in was the overall aesthetic. This was from the backgrounds, to the characters to miniature details like egg sandwiches. You could tell that the creator really wanted people to experience colour in a world that seemed black and white.

This concept of a ‘black and white’ world is displayed in the lives of the characters. Kaori’s illness, Kousei’s stuck state of mind and Tsubaki’s unrequited feelings for her childhood friend. I think it creates reasons for the characters to find solice in something to battle their own sad reality.

All these elements create the anime’s incredible impact. Arakawa made this anime with the intention to pull the viewer out of their own darkness , trying to remind them of the colour that can be found in every day life.

This anime has its own personal magic to give. I’d give it an 8,5 out of 10.
